What Tune Will CRE Be Singing In 2023? Bisnow’s Alternative 2023 UK Real Estate Predictions

When was the last time real estate headed into a new year with this much uncertainty surrounding the future? After a rollercoaster 2022, 2023 promises to be a year in which property could either see a downturn become entrenched or the seeds of recovery planted.

To get a sense of what’s in store for the sector in the next 12 months and beyond, Bisnow asked a group of experts for their 2023 predictions.

But not the usual suspects offering the usual views. We gathered together some of the most interesting individuals to have spoken at Bisnow events or graced our editorial pages from all parts of the industry, canvassing their views on a range of topics: On the prospect for the market, of course, but also how the industry can contribute more to society, the fight against the climate emergency, and who the heroes and villains for the sector will be.

Here are the prognostications of May Al-Karooni, CEO and founder of Globechain, the ESG data reuse marketplace connecting enterprises with nonprofits, small businesses and people to redistribute unneeded items like building materials or office fit-out furniture; Anna Strongman, CEO of Oxford University Development, the property joint venture between Oxford University and Legal & General; Jermaine Browne, co-founder of ARK co-living and re:shape, the hybrid hospitality and residential company; Hannah Chappatte, CEO at Hybrid, the student accommodation tech startup; and Bruce Findlay, managing director of retail at Landsec, the UK’s second-largest REIT.

All of them had to sum up 2023 for real estate as a song or film, so here’s the soundtrack of 2023, according to the experts. Got an idea for a song that will sum up real estate in 2023? Drop an email to [email protected] and we'll add it to the list.
