Affordable Housing Measure Passes In The State Assembly
A measure that would force developers statewide to include more affordable housing in their developments passed the state Assembly Thursday.
Assemblyman Richard Bloom (D-Santa Monica) sponsored the bill, which comes at a time when housing costs are skyrocketing statewide, the LA Times reports.
Under the bill, cities could create policies requiring developers to set aside a percentage of their projects for affordable housing or be forced to pay a fee.
Assemblyman Matthew Harper (R-Huntington Beach) argued Bloom's bill would raise costs for developers.
The measure was in response to a lawsuit filed eight years ago by developer Geoff Palmer that claimed LA's housing policy, which included affordable housing, was in violation of his and other builders' constitutional rights.
