US Firms Locating Facilities In Baja
Boosting Cross-Border Economics

Join us for the Future of the Cali-Baja Megaregion event April 7!

Some US firms are choosing Mexico over China for manufacturing and assembly production, particularly Northern Baja, and we've assembled corporate and real estate experts, government and EDC officials to share their insight at Bisnow's first Future of the Cali-Baja Megaregion event April 7 at the Sheraton Hotel & Marina in Downtown San Diego.

Northern Baja is particularly attractive since it is adjacent its largest trading partner and conveniently located near large US distribution centers and the Ports of Long Beach and Los Angeles. The area offers a highly skilled labor force, with wages on average $2.50/hour in…

Bisnow Feature: Does Co-Working Make Sense For Everyone?

A new CBRE report says co-working makes financial sense across the board in pricey gateway markets—even for larger, more traditional firms, not just the typical startups that occupy the space.

Evan Knudson (pictured), CBRE's San Diego office specialist, tells Bisnow the benefits of co-working are “a function of flexibility, cost and the benefits that come from being in a collaborative environment.”

“By reducing the lease term and not requiring large sums of money to be set aside in security deposits, furniture, it allows companies to expand and contract their workforce when needed,” Evan tells us.

Building For Money Parkers: Q&A With Architect Behind Dubai's Most Expensive Penthouse

Architect Michel Abboud is making a name for himself in a decade of supertalls and starchitects, his latest project being the $74M penthouse "One at Palm Jumeirah"—the most expensive development in the Middle East. Bisnow got a chance to sit down and talk to the architect to get the lowdown on designing uber-luxury in a volatile market.

BisnowWhat's it like to design in NYC compared to somewhere in the Middle East?

Michel: I guess it's much simpler to design, the process is much faster in Dubai. People tend to go through design phases at a much quicker pace and consultants tend to work a little faster even though the permitting process is way more complex. To get a permit in Dubai you have to go through at least four or five authorities and do 20 to 24 submissions, whereas in NYC it's really just one with many steps in it. So overall the process is more complicated to build in Dubai but it's also faster because of the development process, not because of the architectural process. What's important that they have over there, that's not over here, is the ability to sell on the plan. So developers are able to sell 20 to 30, sometimes 50% of their project in the early stages before the permit is even out, which allows them to feel even more secure in the project, allowing them to take ballsier moves.

Attention: Multifamily Owners And Developers (And Hotel Folks)

In recent months it's been reported Airbnb is in talks with big landlords like Avalon, Equity Residential and Camden about working together to rent out apartments with a revenue split.

This would obviously have huge implications for both the multifamily and hotel sectors.

We are therefore excited that Airbnb senior official Chip Conley will be keynoting Bisnow's Lodging & Innovation Series on April 28 in Los Angeles.

Normally our hotel conference is oriented to hotel operators, owners and managers. But this year it will also be of great interest to multifamily owners, developers and brokers. We think you will find our program—which also includes such notables as SLS founder Sam Nazarian, Ace Hotel president Brad Wilson, Virgin Hotel CEO Raul Leal, Google's head of Industry Travel Michelle Vincent and many others—enormously valuable.
