Economists Feeling Optimistic

From investment to the downtown office boom, hear what lies in store for Oakland at Oakland's Annual State of the Market Summit with keynote speaker Oakland Mayor Libby Schaaf.

Economists are optimistic about this year's commercial real estate investment activity following a tumultuous 2017 that saw investment levels falter in some sectors while others witnessed massive growth. Here are the five commercial real estate sectors expected to experience solid progress in the year ahead, according to the Sarasota Herald-Tribune.

Meeting Space Service Convene Is Breaking Into Flexible Workspaces

On-demand meeting space service Convene has carved a niche for itself in the business world, but it has its sights set on the increasingly crowded world of flexible workspace.

When Convene bought Philly-based co-working provider The Hub in February 2016, it inherited three spaces in Downtown Philadelphia at Cira Centre, Commerce Square and the 13th floor of Duane Morris Plaza, which it calls CityView. At first it converted those spaces to suit its meeting service, but it was confronted with the growing demand for flexible workspace.

Fired Mattress Firm Exec Files To Depose CEO, Executive Team Over Prior Knowledge Of Kickback Scheme

The in-house real estate executive accused of defrauding Mattress Firm is looking to open the books on his former employer, what real estate deals company leaders were invested in and what executives knew of the alleged scheme of inflated rents and kickbacks.

Attorneys for Bruce Levy, who headed Mattress Firm's store-growth strategy from 2010 until 2016, filed a motion to compel Mattress Firm to reveal documents showing any real estate investments current CEO Steve Stagner and former CEO Ken Murphy participated in with developers of Mattress Firm stores between 2010 and 2016.

Minnesota Vikings owner and chairman of the Minnesota Vikings Football LLC, Zygmunt "Zygi" Wilf, is a New Jersey-raised real estate developer. Wilf has a bachelor's degree in economics from Fairleigh Dickinson University and a degree from New York Law School in Manhattan.

Born in Germany in 1950, Wilf is the son of Holocaust survivors who later moved to America and founded Garden Homes Development in 1954. The family-run business owns and manages more than 25M SF of retail, commercial and residential developments across the U.S., according to Bloomberg.
