Vancouver Real Estate's Greatest April Fool's Joke Ever?

Multifamily brokers David and Mark Goodman knew they'd provoke a strong reaction with his April Fool's gag. That's why they sought counsel from their lawyer before sending out a faux notice that Vancouver's City Hall was up for sale and that their firm, HQ Commercial, had been retained as exclusive listing agents…

Bisnow Deal Of The Month: The Starwood-Marriott Merger

Winner: The Starwood-Marriott Merger

Why: The Starwood-Marriott merger saga finally seemed to reach some closure in March, when China's Anbang Insurance backed off in its bid to snatch Starwood from under Marriott's nose—but not before one-upping the hotel giant at every turn.

In early March it was assumed that Marriott's $12.2B bid to become the world's largest hotel company would go off without a hitch—until Anbang, hot off of a spree of trophy buys, gave Starwood a new, higher offer.

Bisnow Exclusive: Hotel Metrics Guru Patrick Ford

H Lee Murphy

Patrick Ford has lived and breathed hotels for most of his life. He washed dishes at a resort in New Hampshire while still in high school, then after graduating from the University of New Hampshire with a degree in hotel administration went to work for a regional operator called the Dunfey Hotel Co, which would later become Omni Hotels. After rising to director of operations, he left there in the late 1970s to start up his own hotel brokerage firm.

Dunfey is 73 now and better known as the chairman and CEO of Lodging Econometrics, a research firm he started in 2001 in Portsmouth, NH, when he noticed a lack of data tracking hotel development and deal-making. Firms like Smith Travel Research could tell you occupancy rates in every hotel in Louisville from one month to the next, he noticed, but didn't have a clue about any plans for new construction. He has devised a widely watched pipeline report that follows every new hotel proposed in the US, no mean feat for his firm of 40 statistics-hungry employees.
