Buch Construction: New Headquarters Stays True To Firm’s Roots While Allowing For Growth

While many firms are standing on the sidelines waiting to see what happens to the market, Buch Construction, a Maryland-based general contractor, is planning for the future.

The woman-owned, family-run firm has relocated to a new 40K SF building in Maple Lawn, a mixed-use community in Fulton, Maryland. Buch worked on this project with master developer Greenebaum Enterprises, which over the past 15 years developed a 600-acre farm into one of the area’s premier mixed-use developments.

“From day one we worked with Greenebaum Enterprises principals Michael Greenebaum and Mark Bennett Sr. to design a state-of-the-art building that would complement an already great community,” Buch Senior Vice President and owner Michael Buch said. “We could not have asked for better partners as they stood by us throughout the process. In fact, it was truly a family effort on both sides as Michael’s wife, Adele Richer Greenebaum, owner of ARK Design, did the interior design. We could not be more pleased with the space.”

Even as the firm moves to a new location and continues to evolve as a company, Buch has stayed close to its roots. The business was founded at Jimmy and Marie Buch’s kitchen table in Highland, Maryland — just a stone’s throw away from Fulton. Jimmy grew up in Fulton and the company recently developed his homestead property into a 283-unit, 500K SF apartment building called The Vine.

“Over the years, our growth as a company has been organic and based on hiring great team members. People always say, what comes first, the work or the team? And we believe you better have the team in place first,” Buch said.

The firm’s philosophy is to hire dedicated professionals and foster relationships, both personally and professionally, with every member of the team helping the company elevate its business within the industry.

“We have a great team culture and wanted to build a best-in-class building that would allow our team to have suitable spaces to collaborate not only regarding our projects but to socialize and have fun together,” he said.

The firm’s new headquarters is three stories and features amenities that today’s workers value, including common café spaces, social lounges, modern interior meeting and training spaces, and an event space to host clients. It also includes a 1,400 SF rooftop deck, a multi-use golf simulator and full-height windows throughout. The new building will also be LEED Operations and Maintenance Certified for sustainability.

“We are continuing to expand office technology and business operations," Buch said. "Building a bigger space was the only option to keep up with demand. Also, technology had gotten to the point where our huddle rooms, conference rooms and meeting spaces needed to be upgraded to stay current and competitive. We wanted a setting that allows our team to flourish.”

As the CRE industry continues to rely on advanced technology to get deals done, Buch said that in the new headquarters' collaborative spaces, they've integrated AV conferencing systems that optimize the firm's ability to host training opportunities, meetings and presentations. The AV conferencing systems feature speaker tracking, group framing and presenter tracking, making it easier to collaborate with team members and partners efficiently and effectively.

Since 1984, the firm has grown to more than 200 team members and works across various sectors, including retail, life sciences, corporate office, government, mission critical, healthcare, multifamily, senior living and education. The company also has offices in New York City and Tampa and expects to add additional offices in the near future. 

“We will continue to look for expansion opportunities, anchored by our existing clients who appreciate our level of service and dedication,” Buch added.

The firm continues to maintain great relationships with their long-term clients, according to Buch. It's longest-standing client, The Hecht Co., now known as Macy’s, has stuck with the company since the very beginning, even through some of the most difficult obstacles they've faced. At the new headquarters, the firm hopes to strengthen existing client relationships, as well as forge new ones.
